The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Palacký University started its mission with the clear vision of creating a one-of-a kind environment for future doctors and dentists to pursue their ambitions, develop their skills, and gain knowledge; for the single purpose of the betterment of patient safety and quality care.

Being aware of the unprecedented growth of globalization, the university started to offer English medical higher education programs. Therefore, the medicine and dentistry study programs are offered at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Palacký University (Lékařská fakulta), both in Czech and English. The medicine and dentistry courses are both practically oriented, to such a degree that all graduates most definitely would be able to practice their profession in modern, renowned clinics and hospitals all around the world.

Furthermore, all programs offered at the faculty of medicine and dentistry, are according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and that the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE) has accredited the faculty. Accordingly, all students would be able to continue their studies at other medical faculties throughout Europe.

Additionally, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Palacký University has been accredited and recognized by US and Canada departments of education as well; meaning that all the study programs offered at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Palacký University fully meet the quality standards of medical study programs offered at US and Canada medical faculties.

English Medicine Program

The English medicine program offered at the medical faculty of Palacký University would be a 6-year program in general medicine, and is considered as a master degree program, entitling students as MUDr, which stands for the doctor of medicine. During the past 20 years, the faculty is honored to have welcomed international students from over 15 countries, mostly from the US, Canada and Malaysia; and on average, there are 65 enrollments annually for the English general medicine study program.

Although the curriculum of the English general medicine program is identical with the Czech program, all the seminars, lectures and practicals would be taught in English. Having said that, the students are obliged to take part in Czech language courses for three years during their study. The reason for this obligation is naturally the graduates’ need to communicate with hospital and clinics’ staff like other doctors and nurses and of course patients, who may not speak English.

For the training and practical courses, general medicine students have access to high-standard University Hospital Olomouc, one of the largest in-patient facilities in the Czech Republic which collaborates with nine teaching hospitals, all being directly supervised by the Ministry of Health.

The curriculum for the first two year of the English general medicine program for the most part is composed of theoretical subjects. The theoretical subjects covered during the first four semesters (first two year of the program) are mentioned below:

  • Physiology
  • Biophysics
  • Biology
  • Anatomy
  • Histology
  • Biochemistry

Following the 4th semester the preclinical subjects mentioned below would be covered in 5th, 6th and 7th semester:

In addition to subjects mentioned above, there will be 2 other subjects covered since the 8th semester which are related to public health care: The medical law and Social medicine. The former encompasses disciplines and responsibilities of professionals in medicine and the latter deals with the various factors such as genetics, environment and economy; influencing diseases, health and the practice of medicine.

As mentioned earlier, the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Palacký University follows The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), therefore exchange students would be able to continue their study, and have their credits (gained at other European universities) recognized here at Palacký University.

At the end of the 12th semester, the students would be able to graduate by passing the Final State Examination, which would be from the subjects mentioned below:

  • Preventive medicine
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Internal medicine
  • Surgery
  • Pediatrics
  • Epidemiology
  • Law and Social medicine

Students having successfully passed the final state examination would be entitled as MUDr, i.e. the Doctor of Medicine. The graduates from Faculty of Medicine of the Palacký University who wish to work in the United States would absolutely be prepared to pass successfully the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA). The US obviously would not be the only option for the graduates, as they are fully prepared to practice their profession as doctors or researchers in medical facilities or research institutions all around the globe. The other promising path for the graduates is of course the continuation of their study for post-graduate degrees, i.e. Ph.D. programs.
